ABOUT US (AMSMO)
History of The All Myanmar Shia Muslim Organization (AMSMO)
Formation of the Organization and Historical Central Committees
This organization was founded in 1945. The purpose of establishing this organization was to enhance the unity and connections among the Shia Muslims residing within Myanmar. Similarly, during the Second World War in 1942, when the Japanese entered Myanmar and the trustees of Sheikh Muhammad Jeddah departed for India, it became necessary to maintain and protect the religious buildings, leading to the formation of this organization. At that time, this organization was formed by Agha Syed Farhad Ali Mazandarani (a.k.a.) U Ko Ko Kalay (father of national hero Comrade Ko Thway), together with Syed Ja’far Shirazi (Irrawaddy Flotilla), Sidney Kashani, and Mirza Muhammad Hussein Bindarani. From its founding, Agha Syed Farhad Ali Mazandarani (a.k.a.) U Ko Ko Kalay served as Chairman.
Subsequently, from 1967 to 1972, Syed Agha Taqi Isfahani (a.k.a.) Lieutenant Colonel Aung Myint (Retd.) served as Chairman. During his term, it was named the “All-Myanmar Indigenous Shia Muslim Organization Headquarters,” and beneficial activities were carried out. Branch organizations were also able to be formed in the states and regions where Shia communities resided.
After him, Hajji Dr. Muhammad Shafi Asghar Shirazi (a.k.a.) U Maung Maung Tar (Captain, Burma Army. Ambassador for Peace-IIFWP, USA) served as Chairman. In 1995, the organization’s 50th Anniversary Golden Jubilee was celebrated, and in 1999, the 7th Nationwide Grand Conference was held. Following that, for a period of time, the organization’s beneficial activities came to a halt. Thus, in 2015, a committee was formed to draft new, era-appropriate bylaws for the revival of the organization. On January 5, 2020, the bylaws were confirmed with the endorsement of the members. Subsequently, in 2022, the All-Myanmar Shia Muslim Association was reconstituted in accordance with these bylaws. From the time of this reconstitution until the end of 2024, Hajji Muhammad Ali Hussein Fazil Shirazi (a.k.a.) U Khin Maung Aye (Senior Advocate) served as Chairman.
